September 11th, also known as 9/11, refers to the attacks that were launched against the United States of America. On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a series of four attacks were launched simultaneously by a terrorist group known as al-Qaeda. At this time, nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes, and intentionally crashed them into important U.S. structures such as the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon.

One plane did not make it to its intended target and crashed in a rural area of Pennsylvania. All of the passengers on board the airplanes were killed, along with thousands of people on the ground and in the buildings. Within two hours of the attacks, both towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, destroying a large area around them still referred to today as “Ground Zero”.

A total of nearly three thousand people, along with the nineteen hijackers died in the attacks. The state of New York’s health department reported that a total of 836 first responders, police offices, and firefighters have died as of June 2009 since the attacks as a result of breathing in toxic materials.

Included in the original 2,753 victims reported in 2001, 60 were police officers from the city of New York and the Port Authority, 8 were private paramedics and emergency medical technicians, and 343 were firefighters. An additional 184 people perished in the Pentagon attack. Most of the victims of September 11th were civilians, making up a total of seventy different countries.
