Area 51 is a remote section of the military base known as Edwards Air Force Base. The base is located in southern Nevada, in the western section of the United States. One of the main focuses of Area 51 is the southern shore of Groom Lake, which is located at the center of the base. This shore is home to a very large military air field. The main purpose of this air field is to develop and test experimental weapons systems and aircraft.

The facilities located in Area 51 are managed by the 99th Air Base Wing of Nellis Air Force Base, and is run as an appendage of the Air Force Flight Test Center located at Edwards Air Force Base.

While the name Area 51 is considered to be a bit “taboo” today, it is actually documented in CIA documents throughout history. The area is also referred to as: Homey Airport, Groom Lake, Home Base, and Watertown Strip. Area 51 is a restricted area, with restricted airspace, and is classified as R-4808N, or as military pilots call it “the Container” or “the Box”.

Because of the high level of security and secrecy that surrounds Area 51, and the fact that the United States Government barely acknowledges its existence, there have been numerous theories as to what really takes place at this location. Many people believe this area is used to house unidentified flying objects (UFOs), to study alien life forms, or for other mysterious purposes.
