Astrobiology is the study of the beginning, evolution, circulation, and future of life based in the universe. This is an interdisciplinary field that combines the search for other inhabitable places within the solar system, inhabitable places outside of the solar system, the ongoing search for evidence of prebiotics, field and lab based researched into life’s origin on Earth, and studies and research into the potential that life could be able to adapt to various challenges both on Earth and within outer space.

Astrobiology also tackles the issues of the possibility of life existing beyond the confines of Earth, and how humans can locate it. The field of exobiology stems from astrobiology and covers the search for life outside of Earth, and the possibility of extraterrestrial habitats.

Astrobiology encompasses the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy, ecology, geography, molecular biology, planetary science, and geology to complete investigations as to the existence of life beyond Earth. It also studies biospheres to determine how they are different from that which is located on Earth. Astrobiology is also concerned with interpreting various types of data that already exists, in order to provide more reliable and detailed information from other parts of science. Even though speculation is a portion of astrobiology, this field is primarily concerned with concrete hypotheses that fit into theories in science that already exist.
