Generally speaking, cosmos refers to a type of system that is considered to be harmonious and/or orderly. The term is derived from the Greek term “kosmos” meaning ornament or order, and is considered to be the antithesis to chaos. For the most part, the term cosmos today is used synonymously with Universe.

The general, overall study of the cosmos is referred to as cosmology. Physical cosmology often relates in a technical manner, and refers to a particular space-time continuum within a multi-verse. The system we inhabit is typically considered to be a proper noun and therefore capitalized as “Cosmos”.

Most current scientists who study the cosmos believe that they began roughly 13.7 billion years ago with the Big Bang. The portion of the cosmos that can be observed has been measured to be a current diameter of about ninety three billion light years.

While the diameter of the entire cosmos is not known, Alan Guth’s inflation theory states that the entire size of the cosmos is a minimum of fifteen orders of magnitude larger than the amount of the cosmos that can be observed. If this inflation theory is correct, the original ninety three billion light year diameter of the portion of the cosmos that can be observed is as much smaller than the diameter of the whole universe as the diameter of a helium atom when compared to the diameter of the sun. This means that the entire cosmos is actually equivalent to a minimum diameter of 1026 light years.
