Crop circles are large patterns that are created by flattening out certain types of tall crops such as rye, corn, wheat, maize, rapeseed, or barley. Crop circles are sometimes referred to as crop formations because they are not always constructed in a circular fashion. While it is not known for sure when crop circles first began, reports began to surface in larger number starting in the 1970s.

By the last part of the 20th century, nearly ten thousand crop circles were reported in approximately twenty six countries. The majority of these formations, ninety percent, were found in Southern England. Most of the formations found were located near ancient places of interest, such as Stonehenge. According to a 2003 study, nearly fifty percent of the crop circles found in the United Kingdom were located within fifteen kilometers of Avebury. Most crop circles appear over night, with a small number appearing during the day.

Since their emergence and media coverage in the 1970s, crop circles have become a hot bed of speculation as to their true origin. Many people believe they are due to the paranormal, UFOs, or other anomalistic beings. Some believe extraterrestrials created them, or they are even due to strange meteorological phenomena.

Further, New Age speculation believes that because the crop circles are located near barrows, Stonehenge, and chalk horses, some people have begun to associate them with ley lines. While other New Age followers believe the circles relate to the Gaia hypothesis, suggesting that “Gaia” (the earth) is alive and crop circles are a message relating to the effects of human pollution and global warming.

What do you believe? This strange phenomenon is wide open to a vast array of suggestions and theories. Take some time to visit the Crop Circles section of truthed.com to find out what others have to say, and view their evidence. While here, feel free to join the site and participate in discussions.
