Cryptozoology is a term that refers to the study and/or search for animals that may not be able to be proven to exist. The term comes from the Greek “kryptos” meaning hidden, and “zoology” meaning the study of animals. The field of cryptozoology includes the search for examples of animals that are currently living but have been considered to be extinct, for example dinosaurs; animals that have little physical evidence to back up their existence beyond reports (such as is the case with Chupacabra, or Bigfoot), legends, or myths; and wild animals that are spotted far from their normal geographic locations, usch as ABCs (which stands for Alien Big Cats), or phantom cats.

The animals that are often studied in the field of cryptozoology are often called cryptids, which is a term that was started in 1983 by John Wall. Even though there are number of scientists associated with cryptozoology, it is not considered a true discipline, or a recognized branch of science. Cryptozoology is considered to be a pseudoscience, as it is heavily reliant upon reported sightings, evidence that is considered to be anecdotal, as well as general stories.
