Noetic Sciences

The noetic sciences is a multidisciplinary field that combines subjective inner knowledge with various scientific tools which are objective and work together in order to study a wide range of experiences with human beings.

The phrase noetic sciences was created by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell when he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in 1973. Just two years before, Mitchell was the sixth man to physically walk on the moon, and it was on his trip back to earth that he felt a strong connection with the universe. He would later describe this connection as a “Samadhi experience”. Mitchell claimed that the feeling was palpable and he knew right away that life had to do with a universal connection and could not be just an accident that was based upon “random processes.”

This moving experience led Mitchell to deduce that what we know as everyday reality is actually more mysterious, more delicate, and more complex than modern science wants people to believe. He then asserted that a deeper understanding of one’s inner consciousness could somehow lead to a better and more profound understanding of reality, which could then lead to a more subjective and objective, inner and outer understanding of the simple act of existing. It was this total hypothesis that led Mitchell to form his interdisciplinary field, which today is known as noetic sciences.

The noetic sciences focus on several areas including: meditation, alternative healing practices, psychic abilities, spontaneous remission, consciousness, spirituality, survival of consciousness after bodily death, and human potential.
