The term science comes from the Latin word “scientia”, which means knowledge. This field is systematic that builds upon knowledge and organizes it into explanations that can be tested and used to predict future actions.

Today, the term science is often used interchangeably with “physical science” or “natural science” and therefore is restricted to the areas of study that is associated with the material universe, its laws, and often makes use of mathematics to help support its claims. This narrow definition of the word science came about as part of science became a defining component of the laws of nature. These laws were based upon Newton’s laws of motions, Galileo’s laws, and Kepler’s laws.

The word science also evolved a bit to refer to a natural school of thought known as “natural science.” During the 19th century, especially, science became more and more associated with the natural world and the studies that surrounded it including chemistry, biology, physics, and geology. This has caused the study of society and human thought to be left in limbo a bit, linguistically speaking, as science was now used to define only academic areas of study.

So, now that you have a broad definition of the word “science”, its origin and how it is applied in a variety of fields, it is time to understand what the science category on truthed.com has to offer.
