A UFO is an Unidentified Flying Object. Objects that fall into this category are any that appear to be unusual, are seen in the sky, and cannot be easily identified by a casual observer, or more highly trained observer. Today, the term UFO has become synonymous with alien spacecraft; however there could actually be a number of explanations for the objects being seen.

While UFO sightings have been documented throughout a large portion of history, it was not until World War II that the public really started to take a strong interest in the objects. This is due in part to the fact that it was not until this time that the government began investigating reports of UFOs, often from a military stand point, and UFO research groups completed extensive reports and created entire organizations on the issue.

Most of the studies completed by these organizations have concluded that UFO sightings can be explained away as some other object such as a cloud, balloon, meteors, planets, or other space item. A small percentage of UFO sightings have also been found to be nothing more than a hoax. That being said, even factoring in these reports, there are still between five and twenty percent of reports that remain entirely unexplained. Many of these sightings come from observers that are actually trained such as military personnel, and pilots. Some of these sightings were not seen with the naked eye, but rather showed up on radar readouts. Many supporters of extraterrestrial life believe these reports are of spacecraft from aliens, although many different hypotheses have been made.
