Is a nuclear war in the offing? With every other country looking to prove its strength in terms of nuclear warheads, I think we should pause and think...

I don't really think that we are heading for one, not yet. Things just aren't horrible enough for that sort of thing to start.

No, I don't think we are headed for one. There is no true arms war going on at the moment and I think people are more worried about the economy now than about fighting wars with nukes so we are pretty alright for the time being.

Never we will venture to wage a war with nuclear warheads because most of the countries have nuclear weapons, though it may be clandestine development. We know how horrible a nuclear war would be after the Hiroshima disaster and once started, it has its own chain reactions and the ensuing repercussions would destroy the planet earth. :(

The related fear-psychosis has its way of gaining ground in one way or the other- first it was the cold war, and now, among others, looms the possibility of a bilateral dispute snowballing into an armed conflict complete with alliances. But, in keeping with how Dairyman put it, we essentially are wise enough to know how horrible it all would be.

As said in one of the above comments most of the countries are too occupied with their economic growth and over all development and no one is interested in ruining the ongoing fine setup. So we should push this fear of war far away.

I'm still trying to keep faith in humans to do the right thing but if they were crazy enough to build those things they may be crazy enough to use them.

I once read an artile on Nuclear Bombs in a reader's digest. And to think, There are still Countries that produces this nuclear weapon. And hoping, that it will all come to an end.

Personally, I try to go through each day thinkning positive and believer that the majority of human kind is good. However, as we all know, this is not so.
What worries me the most is Iran. As it sits right now, Iran is continuing to process and enrich Uranium. Meanwhile, Iran is ignoring the request of the international community to talk and regulate production through U.N. monitoring. Crazy leaders with nukes scare the hell out of me; including our own leaders.
A second issue that came to light just the other day was in regard to Russia wanting to re-establish their nuclear missle placement in Cuba. As is sits right now Russia has nuclear subs in the Cuban region. This of course is a result of the U.S. placing Nuclear silo's in Poland.

It is indeed a slippery slope, but I think (or hope) that all leaders know it would be a certain end to the world if a nuclear war starts... Maybe that isn't enough for some of the more "crazy" leaders...

I don't think we are heading for a nuclear war right now...but I don't doubt that it will happen eventually. I don't know if it will happen in our lifetimes...but like the previous poster said that Iran is the one who won't stop processing uranium...if anything starts it might start there.

My immediate worry is for the citizens of Israel. Iran has been foaming at the mouth for a long time concerning Israel and their relations with America. I can see Iran volleying a missle or two at Israel in turn causing the U.S. to launch on Iran, which would cause Russia to launch on the U.S. Let us not forget that India and Pakistan would definitely follow suit. On top of all that don't forget that China has been dying to claim India for a very, very long time. In event this would be WWIII. However, I believe your both right that it is a slim chance. I believe many countries are proactive in their governing and would take the actions necessary to pre-emptively strike Iran.

Russia said that it will retaliate if Poland allows the hosting of an American missile defense shield. This statement came from Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's ambassador to NATO. Poland faces a military attack, highly suspected to be a nuclear one.
I think that Russia so wants to be recognized as a superpower again that it's threatening the European nations and taking up the battle against the U.S. once more. Imperialism shows its ugly head once more. With Russian nukes aimed at us, I'm more than a bit nervous.

I think we have already had a nuclear war. DU was used in Iraq. While dangerous at the level of a true nuclear war it is still a problem that is not being talked about.

If we are not careful that can happen but there are as well wars without that that can be very damaging.

No, it won't happen. Countries just like to have nuclear weapons to show the world that they are just a strong and important as other countries. I doubt if any country would be foolish enough to actually use this kind of weapon.

That's one of many theories.Maybe we're not heading for a nuclear war, maybe we're heading for a large planet impact.Who knows?
