A Swedish man was almost killed when a rock-lifting robot "came to life" and attacked him.
The incident took place in a factory north of Stockholm in June 2007 while the man was undertaking maintenance on the robot, news website The Local reports. The maintenance worker, thinking the robot's power supply had been cut, was in the middle of repairs when the machine — which is programmed to lift heavy stones — lurched forward and grabbed his head. He eventually broke free but not before suffering serious injuries, including four broken ribs. The company that owns the malfunctioning robot was fined $3000 this week after prosecutors agreed not to press charges. "I've never heard of a robot attacking somebody like this … the man was very lucky," prosecutor Leif Johansson was quoted as saying. "He broke four ribs and came close to losing his life." The matter was investigated by police and the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
