Panel advises Obama to prepare for attack against Iran

A panel in the United States has urged President Barack Obama to prepare for more crippling sanctions and to make known that an attack against Iran is a possible move.

The Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. has told Pres. Obama to be ready for continuous sanctions against Iran and to make it public that an attack against Iran is a possibility, according to Bloomberg, "If biting sanctions do not persuade the Islamic Republic to demonstrate sincerity in negotiations and give up its enrichment activities, the White House will have to begin serious consideration of the option of a U.S.-led military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities," the report stated.

This latest report comes as the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, William Burns, is about to begin preliminary talks with the Iranian government on October 1, according to the Politico, over their nuclear program and concerns that western governments have about the country’s goals. The Obama administration generally feels that Iran is at the destabilizing point of its atomic aims.

However, the group believes that the President should have prepared for “sufficient financial, political and military pressure” before agreeing to such discussions and negotiations.

The study was written by former Democrat Virginia Senator Charles Robb, former Indiana Republican Senator Daniel Coats and retired General Charles Wald. The three men further suggest in their report that Iran will have enough material for a nuclear weapon by next year, which, according to the report, “leaving little time for the United States to prevent both a nuclear- weapons capable Islamic Republic and an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.”

International sanctions against Iran have already been implemented however, the panel suggests adding a gasoline sanction, which would forbid foreign companies from exporting gasoline to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A proposal of 60 days has been suggested for Iran once it commits to the negotiations and if not then tougher sanctions would be implemented and another US aircraft carrier battle group would be sent to the waters of Iran.

The report concludes that an Israeli attack would be much more possible and risk-free for the United States.
