This is technology's answer to the quest for immortality.
Ian Pearson, head of the futurology unit at British telecommunications giant BT, said that as early as 2050, a person can download his mind into a machine. He says that he and others are already looking at how to structure a computer that could possibly become conscious and he goes as far as to say that this computer can also have emotions. Another application is to develop multiple machine personalities. It sounds a bit like cloning except that it's not biological. Does this mean that after having downloaded my mind, the computer can then work on my career and I can spend the rest of my time vacationing? When I die, my family and friends would still have "me" around but just not be able to see me or hug me. Or they could make this machine into a walking robot. It all sounds like a science fiction movie but this scientist is telling us that it's within reach. What do you think about it? |

If I had a loved one who died, a downloaded mind on my pc far less creepier than a cloned one. I'd want some part of the person to be still around and if this is what technology can offer, then I'm taking it.

To me, having a loved one on my PC is creepy. I don't know why. I can tolerate spirits, poltergiests, etc., but thinking, feeling 'robots' that possess the thoughts and memories of my loved ones is too much for me. It's too inhuman...and it's wierd.

Interesting concept but I'm not sure what the point of it would be. I've read of things like this in books but didn't expect anything like this to happen in my life time. Oh, wait a minute, it won't happen in my life time so I'm not going to worry too much about it for now.

Interesting. I had heard that they were going to be downloading knowledge that way, but I had not heard about the uploading and storage of a copy of the personality.

Is anyone thinking what I am thinking??
Robots with emotions! Oh no! I think they would take over the world at that point. That shouldn't be made. Science can be so scary. Anyway. That would be kind of cool. Of course, I won't use the computer for labor!! I'd feel bad. I think another you would be nice, I mean, to help you through problems and such. :P I want to live to the day its invented. I hope I won't be too old. :\ Last edited by okirun; 09-05-2008 at 04:16 PM. |

Why can't I remember?!?!?!?!The only movie that keeps popping into my mind is The Thirteenth Floor, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean. This whole concept immediately made me think of The Matrix. Call me quirky, but I'm not a fan of giving machines too much intelligence. |
