Default Why Do We Care So Much About Celebrities?

Do Americans need heroes so much that they will start to look at all celebrities as people we should follow and admire so much?

Young celebrities think that it's okay to do whatever they want because the public follows their every move and they're still hired to do movies.

Why do we care about "baby bumps?" It's not cute and guaranteed we will not be invited to the baby shower.

We read what Oprah tells us to read, we buy the products that she tells us to buy, we act like Hale Berry becoming pregnant but not wanting to get married because marriage is too much of a responsibility. The same goes for "Bradgelina."

Why do you care about them? Do you read People, do you never miss Extra or Entertainment Tonight?

What is the allure that Americans have with celebrities?

skatss,

it is about time someone other than me and my house mate have made this point so adamant, it is entirely true though. Why do we feel the need to bask in the reflective glory celebrities? I have no idea...
I guess people are sheep, is it our generation? allow me to post the following...

" I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables—slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war . . . our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."
—Fight Club, 1999

Perhaps a lingering sense of purposelessness has got us infatuated with those who lives are that of the dream... but let me point out the fact that even movie stars with all that money, can still commit suicide, become dependant on drugs and end up in handcuffs, is that kind of life really the ideal one?

And think a lot of people like to live through other people and celebrities are good people to do that through...

I think with celebrities it is a way to get lost in someone else's life or drama and forget about ours momentarily.

Some of the attention paid is based on envy.

The ability to judge others harshly from the safety of one's own environment coupled with the underlying satisfaction of saying "they deserve to be punished" is the same allure that drives many a religious fanatic.

The emotional cruelty that the regular person can heap on celebrities is a safety valve for those who love to hate them.

I think that we idolize celebrities because we think if we could have what they have then our lives would be perfect. They are elevated to a status above regular people, and this makes us think we need to strive to be like them.

I do not understand why people care so much about celebrities. Personally I could care less what they do or say.

We need someone to look up to! If not, there won't be show like the American Idol that never fail to attract viewers year after year. We need a figure to represent us as life is way too peaceful around here.
