The following article describes a test (the Alan Turing test) to asses whether a computer can ever develop genuine artificial intelligence.

human: so what does your friend do?

robot: he works with software

human: what kind of software?

robot: soup

that last line might have been a dead giveaway.. pretty cool what they're doing though

I was thinking about that soup response... and I recon the response might have really been SOAP....

I mean... if you don't know what SOAP is, it's equally as bizarre a response.

And begins with S - Ends in P....

I'm sure the human test subject's brief isn't "Try to baffle with bullshit"....

IE:

Q: How tall are you?
A: Shirt.

Mind you saying that, she does supposedly work with the Web, so if she doesn't know what SOAP is, she's as thick as a barn door.

Don't think thats a very good test ACE is not the same as AI, AI needs to be able to think,adapt and learn. ACE just follows simple programing Person says hi computer responds with hi. Most of them made the mistake of not programing the ACE to just go "what?" when it didn't understand. That handshaking question is a clear indicator of this instead of just going WTH are you on about as any human would do it jibbers about time and space. What sort of programing is that really.

i agree with talisyn, the mistake these programmers are making is giving these robots all this petty and scientific dialogue to speak. Instead of just saying "Hey how you going? Whats up?" They always say crap like "Good afternoon I am C-3PO Human Cyborg Relations...How might i serve you?"
