The governments have taken all religion out of schools, even banning student bible clubs. They ban the Boy Scouts, and still complain about any form of spirituality.
Now there is a class on secular humanism, materialism and pure cold logic. Throw away spirituality and any other types of non conformist thoughts. I bet Lenin and Marx would be happy.

Well, it's understandable that they would present a secular environment in schools. I know my school system has religious clubs (not sponsored by the school, but is allowed to meet there and is supervised by a teacher). The only problem with taking religion out of school is when it starts subverting spirituality with it's curriculum. Given that the US is based on religious freedom and freedom from religion, it's a bit of a tightrope to walk on to adequately keep these polarities in harmony. It can be a little difficult to discern when to ease up on restricting or deregulating these polarities.

The debate in the US is what was the intent of the first amendment. It states that Congress shall not establish a religion for the state. Some argue it allows for their to be prayer in school, just not sanctioned by one religion or belief system.
In the 1960s, this became a hot issue when a group of atheists sued to stop organized prayer in schools. I agree with the organized prayer part, as the majority will decide what the minority wants. A moment of silence should be the compromise, but some on both sides of the issue are against that.
Personally, I have always wondered why atheists care about such issues. Why not ignore the praying, or the Christmas Nativity scene? Why should they care one way or another if they don't believe in anything? I think many do this type of thing for attention. Negative attention is better than none at all for some people.

I guess it goes back to the good old habit of exterminating every trace of something unsavory. That is the only way atheists can be happy about that. To me, atheism is not even a "religion" as typically described but a philosophy spinning off of science, which is at best a quasi-religion.

Atheism is non belief, and that is all it should be. The person who is an atheist should not care if someone believes or not. I do understand how an atheist can get tired of all the comments when they declare their non-belief. I am a Pagan, and get the same thing. (I usually ignore or smile when people try to "convert" me.)
