I doubt they would make it up if the very most strangest beings we've been presented are the reptillian ones, that are usually laughed at. Usually these beings aren't even presented in mainstream media. You can't just make up a alien that looks like a praying mantis, that is far beyond most people's wildest imagination. Now, supposing these beings exist - and I don't really doubt it, I kinda just go with it - I would assume that it would be easier to learn from kids, as they are far more maleable than adults who have been indoctrinated all their lives.

Unfortunately, the children have been exposed to pop culture's view on what aliens look like. This cannot be considered evidence as it could be in the realm of fantasy.
