Default Mystery Ship With 4 Tons Of Gold "Found"

Quote:
Deep-sea explorers who found $500 million in sunken treasure two years ago say they have discovered another prized shipwreck: A legendary British man-of-war that sank in the English Channel 264 years ago. Watch Discovery video about Tom Dettweiler's three greatest finds, including the shipwrecked remains of the Titanic.
The wreckage of the HMS Victory, found below about 330 feet of water, may carry an even bigger jackpot. Research indicates the ship was carrying 4 tons of gold coins when it sank in storm, said Greg Stemm, co-founder of Odyssey Marine Exploration, ahead of a Monday news conference in London.
So far, two brass cannons have been recovered from the wreck, Stemm said. The Florida-based company said it is negotiating with the British government over collaborating on the project.
"This is a big one, just because of the history," Stemm said. "Very rarely do you solve an age-old mystery like this."

I always found it strange that after abandoning the ships, the governments the ships originated from always stake a claim on the gold and/or treasure that is on it. If they wanted it so badly, why didn't they try to get it themselves? It is just plain greed to go after the salvage workers who are doing all the work and taking all the risk.

I say finders keepers, and i actually thought thats what it was...?

I agree, if the crown wanted so bad why didn't they put in resources to get it? I don't understand how they can just do nothing, then a treasure hunter finds it and they say too bad its ours... Especially after a long period of time. I can see how they would have claims to a certain amount of time so if lets say, a ship sank TODAY that was full of gold, a million hunters couldnt go looking for it and take it.

It is not just England, but Spain and the US (plus the individual states) who want their cut. Some claim the whole treasure, and others want at least half. There are also insurance companies (or their descendants) who will also try to claim the treasure.

I think there are some lawmakers out there who want to change it to finders keepers, or reduce the cut the government can claim.
