I doubt anyone would be fearful of a jihadist group if they fessed up to it. They would just be taken into custody and due process would begin. They wouldn't even be able to get the death penalty so martyrdom is off the table with such a crime, at least in the US.

It seems pretty scary, how can you stop someone from starting fires?

Umm, you can't, really. The way I see it is that "jihad" has become a form of intimidation. It's like an upgraded, international version of what mafias do. If you look at what they're doing, strictly within the confines of action-reaction, it's a lot like a mafia trying to gain influence elsewhere through intimidation. The neo-conservatives would like us to believe that terrorists are EVERYWHERE; however, we're finding that most of the terrorism is everywhere but here. There have been no incidents since 2001. I don't know how much of this credit can be given to the intelligence and law enforcement community, since it clearly has not been efficient nor productive on the surface, what with the wiretapping of virtually every communication in the United States and all; but how much of this is attributable to the idea that maybe there just isn't any terrorists here?
The only people terrorising the public was the Bush administration throughout this entire process. Hell, the entire conspiracy theory community damn near shit themselves when talk of martial law began popping up. Not one person in this very same community has seriously expressed concern about Osama bin Laden's next attack, much less about whether he is even alive. If a forest fire is caused by an Islamic group, I'm not that concerned even though I am pro-trees, because right now there is a far greater threat and that is the government. The government is getting too big itself. We keep squawking about fascism, but nobody noticed that the big companies grew in lock step with the government. There is a reason Welles used the term "Big Brother". The government is enormous and looms over every aspect of your life. |

I think lightning strikes do a fine job of creating wild fires. That is how most of them get started, and there are many plants that can only germinate with the high temperatures associated with wild fires. The problem is more and more people are moving into the areas that are the most prone to such fires. This is a major problem in the United States, and people build million dollar homes in dry areas that usually get a major fire every year.
