Nuclear Subs Collide

A Royal Navy nuclear submarine was involved in a collision with a French nuclear sub in the middle of the Atlantic, it has been reported.

It is understood HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant were badly damaged in the crash in heavy seas earlier this month.

Despite being equipped with sonar, it seems neither vessel spotted the other, the BBC's Caroline Wyatt said.

I saw this last night! I don't get it, they have sonar, where they playing chicken?

Sometimes they try to get as close as possible without colliding. They do play a game of chicken, and this one ended disastrously (at least for the commanders).

You can bet if it was a game of chicken, the commanders would be given desk jobs until their 20 years are up. They would be allowed to retire, but no officer wants to go out like that. The way the damage is, I think it may have been some type of accident. There could always be equipment not working at the time or other problems that could have led to the collision.

Ya I would like to see more information on an investigation, its just so weird because subs are almost literally built TO track other things...

They are also built to track each other. I do know that if it is human error through negligence, it will not be good for the top officers aboard each ship. If it is human error through any other reason there will be consequences, but not as severe as they may not see flag officer ranks.

These subs where both stealth nuclear subs they simply missed each other due to the low levels of sound they each produce. Both are highly covert and aren't supposed to allow themselves to be seen/found to that end very few people know where they are.
