Default EX MI5 Boss Condemns "Police State"

Stella Rimington's outburst shows battle lines in civil liberties clash!

Quote:
Dame Stella Rimington, who spent 30 years with MI5 when it was engaged in Cold War dirty tricks, spying on CND activists and widespread surveillance of the civilian population in Northern Ireland, is worried that we’re becoming a police state.

She’s concerned about laws that interfere with people’s privacy and about a state that frightens people into accepting more intrusive anti-terrorism measures.

Somehow the argument sounds a lot better coming from Lord Bingham of Cornhill, the former Lord Chief Justice, who has called on citizens to use the Human Rights Act to challenge the spread of the surveillance society.

The UK needs a Bill of Rights similar to the United States. Without anything written down, politicians will use the public safety argument all the time.

What George W did was illegal, and if any one ever gets balls here in the US, maybe someone will face charges for the illegal wiretapping, torture and other war crimes.

I do agree it does seem like President Obama and others want to forget about it and move on. I agree with Sen Leahy of New Hampshire on giving immunity to those who tell everything. If they lie or do not tell everything they know, they would be liable for prosecution. The main thing is to find out what the hell happened and how we can avoid atrocities like that from ever happening again.
