The disparate stories only have tenuous links pulling them together.
If it's described as a dog and looks like a dog.....I'm tending towards it being a dog. |

It could be a rabid Rottweiler they are seeing at night. Either way, I would not stick around to find out what kind of dog it is.

Before passing and still of this world, living in Northern Europe, my father used to tell us countless stories pertaining to the folklore that entailed the sightings of a dog like beast. All of the sightings took place on very old stone arch bridges (dating back to the Roman conquest). If you had the miss fortune and the need to cross a bridge especially at night, there was a good chance of encountering such a beast, that very much resembled the one described above. The only differance being, the pitch black dogs where devoid of nostrills due to the lack of oxygen and the overwhelming presence of sulfur in hell
where they apparently resided.Unfortunately the stories passed with my ancestors.
