A lot of them died on the ships due to the conditions. They stacked them like cord wood in shelf like structures with no room to even roll over. You whent where you layed too, so I feel for anyone of them on a lower level.

If there was not a want or need for slaves, there would be no slave trade. America has much of the blame to share for the disgrace known as slavery.

Teslatom, I wouldn't be smug about karma, as the US hasn't paid for all the grief we have caused all the different peoples of color. Even after the Civil War, the US treated blacks as second and third class people. We did the same to Natives, and made them live on Reservations or be killed. We took their children from them to "civilize" them. No country involved with slavery or allowing it is free to place any blame.

Where does that leave Africans? They were in collusion with the slave traders and practiced slavery even before then.....as quoted in the Bible (Exodus etc).

In fact, slavery is still going on in Africa. Why is it not so important now???

The Northern Colonies forbade slaves as they had no economic need for them. If they had huge plantations to hand pick cotton or crops that were labor intensive, they would of allowed slaves.
The African tribes that helped also get share in the blame. They did that to get rid of their enemies.

Not very many get off smelling like roses for the issue of slavery. Most of the people were only involved to make money off of it. They are just as bad as the ones who actually traded and owned slaves.

I apologize about the smug remark. It is beneath me to say that about another member.

Since they thought dark skinned peoples were inferior, I guess it can be compared to Hitler. They did, however, want the slaves to be alive. It was expensive to have them die on it. Not a humane reason, just an economical one.
