Pure socialism and pure capitalism does not work. We do need some types of regulation, or the companies would run rampant. One needs only look at the past when the railroads held enormous power. They had much technology available for the safety of the workers, but did not implement anything until enough employees were killed or maimed on the job.
I also think getting the government into everything is a bad idea. The best solution is a balance that protects consumers and workers, without the overbearing red tape and bureaucracy. The problem is no one wants to give up their power.

We started out as a capitalist society and we're turning into a socialist society. As one comment said, we need middle ground. I disagree. What we need is an informed and active public to keep capitalism in check through the free market. For example, to stop something like global warming, we'll need some forms of socialism until the public becomes aware. We the people are capable of stopping global warming, but we aren't. Unfortunately it seems we need the government to save us because for now, we're too stupid to save ourselves. I am however a huge free market/capitalist advocate.

Unemployment Insurance, Social Security, Medicare are all socialist programs. The thinking was to privatize social security and invest it in the stock market. If they had done that, social security would have tanked along with the market. We do need middle ground, with as little government and bureaucracy as possible. Let the local governments take care of the little stuff, and stop being a nanny state.

We have a central bank who controls all our money which is worthless paper since it is no longer backed by gold, and now our government is bailing out corporation who failed with more worthless paper instead of letting the free market be...well a free market

I also agree the Federal Reserve should be abolished and the gold standard brought back. JFK started to print United States notes instead of Federal Reserve notes, and wanted to bring the $1 and $2 bills under the gold standard (the silver market was controlled by a few powerful families). Look where it got him.
I also believe in the free market, but there needs to be some regulations to make sure things stay legitimate. We also need some social programs as safety nets to help out those in need. Less, but wiser regulation if that makes sense.

It is interesting Sen McCain is proposing an extra $300 billion taxpayer funded bailout for buying up houses (wasn't the $700 billion bill supposed to do that?), and not one of the Republicans are complaining about it. If Sen Obama did the same, every Republican would be crying socialist.

The answer to this question is no it is not socialist, nor is it capitalist. It is a two-tier system. Socialism for the wealthy, capitalism for the rest. In other words, fascism.

The socialist programs we have in place is for the equality of every person in the nation. It is done in the best interests of the people, not the economy.
