Could be nothing, but then again it could be exactly what it looks like.

I'd say it's entirely deliberate.

Here is a reference to some artwork -- granted this author takes it into the realm of extreme coincidence and it put me off to the entire idea for awhile but now I have taken a second look. Obviously some instances of this "M" hand signal in this book are pure chance and or unprovable because they are not clearly enough defined. The author should have maintained a higher standard in his selection.

There are examples of very old portraits that show the exact same thing we are seeing on the cover of Vogue hundreds of years later.

It would be very interesting to walk the halls of the Rothschild estate and take note of the symbolism in their family portraits.

The idea of scanning thousands of publicly viewable portraits for symbolism does not sound very appealing to myself, considering that it would not be found online for starters. There is a museum in my town but I believe it is geared toward the "Pre-Historic" period.
