The origins of the word 'panic' are said to be the fact that the Greek God Pan haunted the groves of Arcadia (Atlantis/Tula), amusing himself by playing a flute and inducing terror and panic in travelers without apparent cause. Later it is believed that when Pan showed himself in post-Pagan times, that people thought he was lucifer because of the obvious similarities in appearance.

The only case I can think of is the now famous (or infamous) "Devil's Footprints" story from the South Devon towns of Topsham, Lympstone, Exmouth, Teignmouth and Dawlish on February 9, 1855. The hoof prints were seen all over the snow and on roof tops. Explanations range from a balloon to an unknown creature.
Thank you for the illustration, Truthed! |

I think somebody posted here about this at the time....
But in that quality British publication "The Sun", on March 13th, there was news about the same kind of hooved footprints in the snow around the same locations that Kidflash mentions... Devon, Exmouth etc.... ![]() Link here: Satan's Footprints in Devon....

I think perhaps the hoofed people are just Old School legends... Tall tales if you will. :-)
Perhaps more common in European folk lore?

My parents, through generations of folk lore, would enlighten us with tails of bridge crossings after dusk. They would claim that certain bridges (around their rural area) where not wise to cross after nightfall, for fear of an encounter with a dark cloaked figure with cloven feet, and upon closer inspection realized it was also lacking nostrils.
