Cryptozoology is one of the more interesting parts of the fringe science, as it has the most respect of the fields of the paranormal. That is not saying to much, as there are still professors who get their tenure threatened when they decide to research Bigfoot and other cryptos out there. I have some thoughts on the subject, and they may not be too popular when it comes to some of the creatures out there:
1. Loch Ness has had its entire area searched by sonar. There has not been a trace of a large creature living in it. Many of the photographic evidence that was touted as real has been proven to be a hoax. Even marine biologists argue there is not enough of a food source in the Loch to feed a population of large beasties. I am one who believes Nessie is either a sturgeon or a large eel. There are those who argue there could be underwater caverns to the sea which the creatures can move back and forth in, but I find that unlikely. It is more and more likely there is a mundane explanation for the sightings, but many people do not want to hear that. I still think the legend should live for tourists, and the land itself is very beautiful and does not need a monster legend to get people to visit. With no evidence and searches done by sonar ending up negative, this is one that will stay a legend. 2. Bigfoot (and all other large unknown primate type apemen from around the world) is still an enigma. Whereas the Loch Ness Monster has a very limited range for a population to survive, Bigfoot has a vast wilderness that has still not seen a human set foot in it. I don't think people understand how vast some of these areas are. Alaska, Canada, Asia, and Australia are huge areas, with wilderness areas that are still untouched. A primate population can thrive unnoticed in those areas. Footprints with ridges and unknown hair samples have been found. Unfortunately, the DNA in many of the finds is too deteriorated to get any information out of it. Many researchers go to areas where there are sightings and put in motion detector cameras. Those never seem to work, and it could be due to the odor of humans in the area. Most creatures have a well earned fear of man. They stay away from us as we are very destructive. There are two problems with Bigfoot, and the first is no serious research is being done by biologists to find out if it is real. They want the body first, then they will do the research, a chicken/egg scenario. The second is the idiot hoaxers who want to make a buck. The Georgia freezer case has many Bigfoot researchers reeling, and for good reason. Most look at Bigfoot as a hoax, or a sighting by a rube. And that is to bad for any serious researcher out there. There are many other cryptos out there that need the proper research. Some have actually been solved as the chupacabra has been found to be some mutant dog in Texas. The Puerto Rican chupacabra is apparently different, but a nest revealed canine DNA. Could a new mutant breed of dogs be responsible for the killings of chickens? I say yes. I just hope some of the sightings get taken seriously, and researchers do their jobs to gather the evidence. If a new creature is discovered that was one of legends, it would be an incredible find. |

I tend to agree with you k.flash, it seems that most research undertakings are privately funded. Soon the resources become exausted as well the interest of the financier's, the research and interest fizzels out. Probably for the better, think of the local tourist trade that would suffer if they all turned out to be nothing more than a hoax?

I don't think Loch Ness would suffer if it was all proved a hoax. The area is known for its beauty and history. Also, the hoax could be another selling point. With all the scientific explorations done with the most advanced equipment, nothing has been found. There really isn't enough of a food supply to support the number of creatures needed for survival. Eyewitness accounts could be that of a large sturgeon or eel like fish. So far, all the videos and photos are either hoaxes or have other mundane explanations for them.
I do hope the search for other crypto critters does not suffer because of the basic findings at Loch Ness. |
