Optional and wishful hearing.

I have been facing a problem for quite some time, my mominlaw is hard of hearing most of the times, but to our shock at times she is able to hear even the slightest of whisper

.Now what is the reason to it, we have got best treatment for her, now the doctor says sometimes people do have the problem of wishful hearing

.I am not able to take it, is there any logic to it?

Some people only hear what they want to hear. She tunes out what she does not want to here, but is tuned in if her name is stated.
The same can be said for dogs, when you tell them to get off the couch. But the dogs hearing is great when you bite a potato chip and the damned mutt runs in from the other room!
