Default Folktales by the Brothers Grimm

Who doesn't know who Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel are? These are stories by Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm. I just thought that they deserve mention because they fueled the imagination of kids and adults alike. Well, Disney sanitized their stories enough so that kids won't get nightmares. The tales, as the brothers wrote them, were far more violent though.

I've seen it.. I remember remarking out loud that Monica Bellucci is stunning. I liked the movie, didn't love it. Heath Ledger (bless his soul) and Matt Damon are competent actors. Anyway, some fairy tales and nursery rhymes are scary to some kids. Wasn't it Snow White that had a version with Sigourney Weaver as the stepmother/witch/queen. That was possibly what the Grimm brothers had in mind when they wrote it.

Rumpelstilskin is one crazy character who scared me half out of my wits when I was younger. My older sister used to read it out to me. After determining that the little gnome/dwarf freaked me out, she eventually tormented me with it.

Come to think of it, why are children's most beloved tales scary? Their plots are more of the horror/suspense variety. Aside from the brothers grimm's tales, The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) is another example. At least, the publishers are making sure to sanitize these versions for kids. Arabian Nights has some steamy and gory stories.

Parents in general tell stories that scare their children from staying out late or talking to strangers and all that, then the kids grow up and tell their kids the same stories and that's probably how these stories became famous.

Ya all these disney movies have underlying lessons to teach kids not to do something by scaring them

Disney movies don't scare, they make me think that I'm a princess locked up in this ordinary life and I'm awaiting a prince to take me away and live happily ever after. I'm not dissing disney by the way. I grew up on their princess animations, which I now think are a bit sexist. Parental guidance is advised.
