Whats your job? Is it really fun?
I'm a teacher, of a 3rd grade class. Can't really say much.

Until a couple of months ago, I was the assistant parts manager for my local Pontiac-GMC dealership. Then, they sold the franchise and closed. I've been collecting unemployment while looking for a new job, which I landed at the end of last week.
In a couple weeks, I'll be working for a body shop in town, where the whole of my duties will be obtaining parts for wrecked vehicles that come into our shop. My old job wasn't fun, but I got along great with the people, and made a lot of close friends from it. My new job is probably not going to be much fun either, but I'll make the best of it. It's the auto industry; when everyone's making money, the job is pleasant. When nobody's making money, it becomes barely tolerable. I also have a couple of "adult oriented" websites that I maintain, and make a little extra cash on the side from. Now that...that's kind of fun, just not as much fun as many people would expect. A lot of it is very tedious, and there's nowhere near the money that a lot of people assume you'd make. Still, every little bit counts, and I can write off my computer, my internet, and my phone on my taxes. I can also play around online while doing it. It's a slow process, but I've seen a steady increase in my income from it, and it's something that POTENTIALLY could become my full time job in a year or so. It's kind of a recession-proof industry. (And it's worldwide.) |

Cashier at a grocery store. If only I could kick myself in the ass enough to make a decent effort at school, I'd probably end up proliferating my philosophical outlook for a price rather than just for free on the internet.

I have a disability which prevents me from working. I would rather be working as I miss the friendships and the bitching and moaning that goes along with a job. (Disability is not very much, but I still live in a small apartment and do not need to live with my family. I like my independence while I still have it.)
Sillygoth, it may be rough as the auto industry is going to get worse before it gets better. In your new job, do you get to go out of the office? I always liked jobs where I was not in one place all the time. Added: I was in the military, worked for many different stores and was also a security guard among many, many jobs. The smaller jobs are very unstable as new managers love to fire all the workers and hire their own crew. I fell victim to that many, many times. I liked the variety of my jobs, as I learned all about what makes this country tick. The low wage people are the backbone of the country, and they are nickled and dimed to death. okirun: Thank you for being a teacher. That is one of the most under appreciated jobs out there. Third graders (eight and nine year olds) are brats and it takes a wonderful person to have control in that situation. Last edited by kidflash2008; 11-23-2008 at 10:17 AM. Reason: edited to add |

My last post was 'Head of IT Services' for a large media company in the UK: digital, television and newspapers. Through "consolidation", I got laid off in August and am currently in between positions. I have a BSc. (FCH - First Class Honours) in "Business Information Technology" and a Master's Degree (MSc.) in "IT Systems Development".

Kidflash-You're right; the industry is still in a downward spiral, and it's probably not going to get better for awhile longer. The upside to me working at a bodyshop is that people commonly aren't paying out of pocket for our services. Insurance is taking care of the vast majority of work we'll be getting. Plus, a certain amount of choice is taken out of their hands. While they have the option of going to 20 or more locations to have an oil change, their insurance tells them to bring the car to us. We've got a captive audience, really.
As far as I know, I'll be staying in the office, which suits me just fine. I also won't be dealing directly with customers, which is even better. Quite frankly, I HATE having to deal with customers. Twelve years over two jobs, I've had to deal with customers, and all it taught me was that the "average customer" likes to complain when they don't get their way, no matter how foolish or outlandish that is. They also like to yell, and ask for supervisors if they're told "no". In an ideal job, I actually wouldn't have to SEE another human being to make money. This isn't quite that level, but it's getting closer to what I'm looking for. At least it's nothing remotely retail; I won't go back to that for less than fourteen dollars an hour, unless I get stuck in another unemployment rut. |

I treat my homeroom kids as my own, but they can act like nuisances a lot. Thank you. Lol, I was afraid to start a topic about our jobs, I didn't want to get too personal. But seeing all of the positive responses, we should totally start more threads like this!
