![]() One hot day in the July of 1854 Farmer, Orion Williamson from Selma, Alabama was sitting on his porch with his wife. Minutes later as we walked across the road into a field across the road, his wife and several other witnesses including his son were horrified to see him VANISH before there eyes. Literally disappear. The following morning, hundreds of other volunteers arrived from nearby communities, along with a team of geologists. They began digging at the point where Williamson disappeared but a few feet below the surface, they hit solid bedrock. There were no cave-ins, crevices or holes to explain where he had gone. He had simply vanished. And while what happened to Orion Williamson was certainly strange, it did not prepare anyone for what happened next. The following spring revealed an odd circle that appeared in the field at the exact spot where Williamson was last seen. The grass within the circle died and this curious event was pointed out to Mrs. Williamson by investigators who were still interested in the mystery. By this time, Mrs. Williamson was still so traumatized by the vanishing that she was reluctant to mention her husband’s name or to consider what had become of him. Her strange behavior brought many questions from volunteers and the authorities alike. Why was the woman still in such a state of shock? True, the disappearance of her husband was undoubtedly bizarre but why did she refuse to talk about him? In a quavering and fearful voice, Mrs. Williamson finally explained. She told the searchers that in the days following her husband’s disappearance, she and her child distinctly heard Williamson’s voice calling for help from the spot where he had vanished. They had run to the spot each time they heard him, but there was no one and nothing there. The calling continued for almost two weeks with Williamson’s voice becoming weaker and weaker as the days passed. On the last night he was heard, the family slept outside on the edge of the vanishing spot. They heard Williamson’s whispers and then he was heard no more. |

Wow! It sure sounds creepy and eerie to me. If I am in such a position, I would be at loss in what to do next. No wonder Mrs. Williamson behaved in such a manner as she think people would think she is crazy if she let it out.

This was a story i read along time ago and had searched for it ever since, however the other night after watching an episode of Beyond Belief, i came across a forum someone had posted this story. It was re-written in a book by Ambrose Bierce, a writer seemingly obsessed with people just vanishing.

I've got a book upstairs about something like this. Its about people that step through a sort of time portal. Went missing for a few months/years and then just stepped back into time again. I'll have to find it and give you guys the details

This story, like many other type of stories seems to be early urban legends. Try to trace it back to see if there are any articles or if it is a fictional story. I will put it in the fictional story column for now.
Edited to add a column in Dr Randle's blog on a mystery disappearance. It is the September 12, 2008 report. http://www.kevinrandle.blogspot.com/ Here is one of the more popular cases from the ages that has been solved. Last edited by kidflash2008; 09-28-2008 at 10:21 AM. |
