Default Scientists study OBEs

Scientists study 'out of body experiences'
People who report seeing bright lights or tunnels as they leave their bodies in near-death experiences are having their claims treated seriously in a hospital study.

Scientists study out of body experiences
Sceintists will see if consciousness continues after brain death

Doctors in hospitals in Britain and the US will study 1,500 heart attack patients to see if people with no heartbeat or brain activity can have "out of body" experiences.

Some people report being able to soar out of their bodies and look down on themselves and medical staff.

The study at 25 UK and US hospitals will include doctors placing images on shelves that are only visible from the ceiling to test the theory.

Dr Sam Parnia, an intensive care doctor who is heading the study, said: "If you can demonstrate that consciousness continues after the brain switches off, it allows for the possibility that the consciousness is a separate entity.

"It is unlikely that we will find many cases where this happens, but we have to be open-minded.

"And if no one sees the pictures, it shows these experiences are illusions or false memories.

"This is a mystery that we can now subject to scientific study."

Dr Parnia said that after a cardiac arrest, where the body is technically dead, doctors restart the heart and reverse the dying process.

He said: "What people experience during this period of cardiac arrest provides a unique window of understanding into what we are all likely to experience during the dying process."

Hospitals involved include Addenbrookes in Cambridge, University Hospital in Birmingham and the Morriston in Swansea, as well as nine hospitals in the US.

Seems like a very interesting study, for some reason I can't believe they are letting them do it, don't get me wrong I think it is great but I didn't think they would be able to get approval for funding for such a "radical" scientific theory. Either way I am excited to see the results!

I had an OBE, but I did not die so it was not a NDE. I started to get a strange feeling in my body. I have had dizzy spells, so I knew it wasn't that. I though I was dying, and stated in my mind "Oh, Shit! I'm dying!" I was thinking clear and then I was floating above my body. Sounds and sights were vivid, and I had a calming feeling. I was wondering where my journey would take me, and then I started thinking of how I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to my family. I soon was whisked back into my body and everything became noisy. I later asked if I had pure oxygen (the answer was no) and was not given any type of drugs. When I told the intending physician I was dying, he was fascinated by what had happened.
The body can "live" without the soul, as evidenced in a certain case in Florida a while back.

So you where in the hospital when this happened?

I was in the ambulance when the feeling started. When they took me out of the ambulance and put me on the cot, I started to float above my body. I watched them work on me and then started to float toward the outdoor ceiling. I was preparing for my journey when I started thinking about my family. I have experienced dizziness, but I was totally aware of what was happening. The sensation is very difficult to describe, but it was one where I did not fear what was happening. I am more logical and down to Earth, or at least I was before I had the experience. I can only conclude that the body has a soul. I do not have any answers to the questions that people have. While most of my family members do believe it happened, others state I hallucinated. I know differently, but then it doesn't bother me if people think that. I know what happened to me, and it was very real.

Scary at first, but then it was very calming as you discover you have a soul. As I originally stated, I thought I was going to die, and was scared at first, which is why I thought "Oh, Shit! I'm dying!" When I told my sister that one, she thought I was kidding, and then thought it was funny and quite real. I do think most people when they talk about these things keep out their original thoughts. Probably because they are also a little like mine were!

I had an OBE after drinking a bottle of tequila and 7 bacardi mixers...
