Default Damned to Hell!

I'm a christian. Not through any choice of my own. Its more a tradition in my family to get christened and sure we celebrate xmas, go to funerals and weddings ect at church. But I don't go every sunday. Infact last time I went to church I laughed my socks of at a new age song that was been sung. The main reason I'm posting is because I have a friend who is very religious and practices Christianity very closely. I don't have a problem with this. He's a dude and a good colleague of mine. But we got on to talking on this subject the other day. I shared my views , As someone who appreciates the theory of a 'god' but I'm more open minded to just stick to that one lane of belief. Then I asked him 2 questions.

1. If intelligent life was found on a different planet what would that mean for his faith?
He replied that it would be gods work as well. Fair enough.

2. If I don't believe in god/Christianity will I be damned to hell?, he replied in a round about way .......yes. Although you could tell he was reluctant to say this as we are good friends , but it seems like he's been 'swallowed' by his faith.

So what's your views on this. Should I be worried ect? Because I really don't feel it!! ......

Mmmm, Unfotunately im a hypocrite. If i was on my own i suppose i wouldnt bother with religious festivals, but as my wife and kids are catholic we celebrate christmas and easter and i do sort of enjoy these times but not for the religious side.

I just cant get my head around the god concept. Im told that god has always been there yet no matter how old things are they must have a beginning, and while i have seen some evidence for many of the phenomenon i believe in with my own eyes, I have never seen anything that would suggest god.

So I dont think you should be worried about going to hell if you have doubts about the existance of god.

However I think when that fateful day comes and I am ready for the big sleep, I think i might just get a priest and repent my sins just in case....Hey ive been wrong before!!

I'm just curious as to whether or not you both know the origin of the two holidays known as Christmas and Easter? If you do , what are you thoughts, feelings about it? Also I would think that if the god you believe in were to send you to hell for simply not believing in him, then that would not be a god I would want to worship. NO offense! But you would think him creating a race of people capable of logical thinking would make accusations as such. Accusations such as, "well its hard for me to believe if I haven't seen him before."

Also, just a hypothetical situation. If you were to have a child, who just so happens to be taken from the moment he/she is born and transported to the other side of the world to be raised by another family, never to be seen again until much much much later...If you were ever reunited , would you expect the child to call you mother/father? I feel this is an important question because the answer is crucial and relates to your question about not believing in your god. If your answer is "no" you would not expect the child to call you mom or dad, would you still love the child because it is from you? If your answer is "Yes" you would still expect the child to call you mom or dad then how would the child ever come to that realization haven never to have know you? I personally don't believe in the same God as you two but the fact that were all trying to find out who or what god is seems to be a decision that any god should not be mad about. We have to crawl before we can walk. Sometimes living one life just isn't enough time to figure it all out. If were all reflections of God , then we should be capable of coming to the same conclusions, understandings, or ideas as this being. So Just simply ask yourself. Would you send you to hell ?

even though I consider myself an Athiest (Well agnostic really) I always keep Pascals Gambit in mind.

@AA. Weeeell I know the origins of both xmas and easter but cannot fathom the relationship between the death of christ (who funnily enough i believe existed although not quite as the bible as we know it depicts him), and chocolate eggs and bunnies, yeah ive been told its symbolic, but bunnies??
As for xmas, well its not strictly a christian festival is it? I mean wasnt the birth of christ moved to an existing pagan festival by some roman emperor (cant remember which) and the giving and recieving of gifts is actually the remnants of the pagan side of the festival, so celebrating christmas doesnt strictly mean you have to be christian. But Im just being flippant really because its not the reason i celebrate christmas anyway. The truth is (with me anyway), my parents are christian so we always had christmas at home, and now my wife and kids are christian and we celebrate christmas. However i do not partake in the religious stuff (church on xmas eve n stuff) but im all for the commercial side of it its fun and the only day my wife lets me at the telly remote.
