According to todays quality British publication 'The Sun', it has been a long standing directive that RAF pilots have orders to engage UFO's if they are deemed to be a threat.
It has apparently happened many times and the MoD are obliged to keep it quiet unless it comes down in a populated area. READ MORE

There are formerly classified documents from the USA of shoot down orders by Harry S Truman. This was the case in the very well known 1952 Washington DC flying saucer wave, perhaps one of the best cases out there.

William Cooper stated in his main address on Ufo's and the truth about Ufo's that in the first few instances of military shoot downs, they did so out of fear and confusion, but what was apparently happening is that they realized when they pointed the infrared radar equipment used to pick up "bleeps on a sonar" in the direction of the UFO it seemed to bring them down, so orders to engage Ufo's was originally and i quote "Just point the Radar at it and Pump the juice".
